One of the most exciting moments at the AED annual conference was the official presentation of the Critical Points for Early Recognition and Medical Risk Management in the Care of Individuals with Eating Disorders. AED has invested significant time, energy and resources in putting together the first true guide to assist primary care physicians who may not have received adequate training in this area. In this blog today we would like to thank the many individuals and groups who participated in creating this important document and when you have a moment please go to aedweb.org and download the brochure. The original idea for this brochure, which is intended to help physicians provide effective evidence based care in the treatment of patients with eating disorders originated from family members with particular impetus from Mary Beth Krohel. We want to thank her for her leadership.

The Society for Adolescent Medicine and the American Academy for Pediatrics have already endorsed this brochure. We expect a number of other medical groups to endorse this brochure in the near future as it is in the review process for many other organizations. In addition, advocacy groups including FEAST, NEDA, BEAT and MEDA have been instrumental in the funding and distribution of this important document. At a time when we are increasing awareness of the extent of damage eating disorders can do and also the tremendous improvement that can occur with recognition and treatment, this coming together of individuals, families, advocacy groups, and professional organizations is extremely hopeful for those with eating disorders. All of us working together is the only effective way to move the field forward and help move our clients, patients, and loved ones into recovery.
