CCED incorporates Dialectical and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, as well as the Maudsley Approach, into its Eating Disorder Treatment programs. We encourage you to speak with our Trusted Specialist.
Our children and teenage Eating Disoders programming draws from three statistically effective
treatments: the Family-Based or Maudsley Approach; Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT Therapy), which teaches
skills in effective emotion regulation; and Cognitive Behavioral
Therapy (CBT Therapy), considered to be the backbone of any effective Eating
Disorder treatment.
Psychiatric Evaluation for Teenage Eating Disorders
Psychiatric evaluation and treatment are also
provided by our staff Psychiatrist, Mark Warren MD. All adolescent clients
will be required to be medically monitored either by a physician of
their choice, or one of our allied pediatric physicians who specializes
in treating the medical concerns of adolescents with an Eating
Disorder.
There are several levels of care available for adolescents
suffering from an Eating Disorder and their families. Adolescent group
programming is typically open to children ages 10-18. Children younger
than 10 may be treated with a "pure" Maudsley Approach, as described
below.
Day Treatment Programming (DTP):
The Adolescent DTP meets 3-5 days per week, 5-6 hours per day. The
number of days in DTP each week is determined by the specific needs of
the adolescent. However, in most cases, adolescents’ begin the DTP
program 5 days per week.
Day Treatment Format
This treatment format allows our adolescent
clients to have two meals and one snack on-site, participate in peer
support, DBT, and CBT therapy skills groups, and evening programming with their
parents 3 nights per week.
Clients and their families will have a
Maudsley Approach family therapy session each week to facilitate the
recovery process at home and to support the family during this
difficult time. Clients will also have weekly meetings with the
psychiatrist. At the beginning of the DTP therapy treatment process, parents
and their adolescent will meet with our staff dietitian for advice and
information on providing nutritionally and calorie appropriate meals.
All meals and snacks are provided by parents.
Intensive Outpatient Programming (IOP):

The Adolescent IOP Program consists of 3 hours of group treatment,
1-3 days per week. The number of days of treatment each week is
determined by the specific need of each adolescent.
Intensive Outpatient Therapy
Specifically,
treatment includes adolescent peer support, DBT and CBT therapy skills groups,
parent participation for one hour each evening, and a Maudsley Approach
family therapy session each week. Weekly psychiatric visits are
provided as needed.
Parents attend twice weekly groups to learn the DBT
skills along with their children and thus can help support skill use at
home. One evening per week, parents have their own group, led by one of
our experienced professionals. During this group parents of all our
adolescent clients share support and attain important feedback.
“Pure” Maudsley Approach Program:
Some families may opt to address their Child or Teenage Eating Disorders using only the Maudsley Approach. In its purest form, the
Maudsley Approach of treating an Eating Disorder believes that parents
are the key to success, and the leaders of the treatment team.
Parents Role
Parents
take responsibility for planning, providing and supervising all meals
and snacks, with the guidance and support of weekly family meetings.
The Maudsley Approach may be most successful for families with young children
experiencing an Eating Disorder, families who are interested and
committed to a higher level of care in their home setting, families who
live a distance from CCED, or for children whose Eating Disorder
symptoms would suggest this level of care.
